When someone we care about is admitted to the hospital, sending a hospital flower delivery is an immediate and beautiful way to show support. The vibrant colors and fresh scents instantly transform a clinical room into a space of comfort. However, the blank enclosure card that accompanies those flowers often causes a moment of panic.
What do you say to someone who has just had a baby versus someone recovering from major heart surgery? What do you write to a friend facing a long battle with a chronic illness versus a colleague who had a routine appendectomy?
The phrase "get well soon" is a classic for a reason—it is universally well-intentioned. But relying solely on this phrase can sometimes feel inadequate, especially when the medical situation is complex or prolonged. As a communication specialist, I help people find the right words when words feel difficult. This guide breaks down how to tailor your get well message based on the specific type of illness or recovery your loved one is facing.
This category includes things like an appendectomy, a broken bone, a minor procedure, or a severe bout of the flu. The recovery is generally straightforward, and the prognosis is excellent.
The Tone: Optimistic, cheerful, and focused on a swift return to normal life. You can often inject a bit of lighthearted humor here, especially if you are close to the patient.
What to Write:
This includes heart surgery, joint replacements, stroke recovery, or severe trauma. The patient is facing a significant recovery period that will require intense physical therapy and time.
The Tone: Supportive, patient, and deeply reassuring. Avoid toxic positivity (like "You'll be running marathons next week!"). Instead, acknowledge the difficulty of the journey while expressing unwavering support.
What to Write:
A flower can't heal, but when it carries your love, it becomes more than petals and stems. It becomes a whisper of hope, a gentle reminder that they're not alone. In every bloom, your care travels across the distance — bringing comfort and strength.
This is perhaps the most difficult category. When a loved one is hospitalized for a flare-up of a chronic condition (like MS, Crohn's, or severe autoimmune issues) or receives a diagnosis with an uncertain timeline, "get well soon" can actually feel invalidating. They may not "get well soon"—they are managing an ongoing condition.
The Tone: Validating, consistent, and focused on presence rather than a cure. The goal is to make them feel seen and less isolated.
What to Write:
When someone is hospitalized for severe depression, anxiety, or other mental health crises, the stigma often makes people hesitate to reach out at all. This is a mistake. A get well bouquet and a supportive card are incredibly powerful reminders that they are not abandoned.
The Tone: Completely non-judgmental, loving, and focused on their bravery in seeking help. Never ask for details or offer unsolicited advice.
What to Write:
While a hospital stay for childbirth is generally a joyous occasion, it is still a major medical event that involves significant physical recovery and exhaustion.
The Tone: Joyful, congratulatory, but also deeply acknowledging of the mother's hard work and need for rest.
What to Write:
The enclosure card on a floral arrangement is small, but its impact is massive. By moving beyond a generic "get well soon" and tailoring your message to the specific reality of the patient's medical journey, you demonstrate a profound level of empathy. You show them that you truly see what they are going through. At Bedside Bouquets, we know that the right words, paired with the perfect floral arrangement, create a powerful combination of comfort and care that supports true healing.
